Publication
The challenge
English Heritage perceived they had a major challenge with levels of awareness in the managers and owners of their properties regarding inclusive access to and enjoyment of both buildings and landscapes. EH worked with partners the National Trust and Heritage Lottery Fund to commission research toward production of advisory guidelines to address the issue
What we did
In his role as Program Manager to the Sensory Trust, Mike Westley, as part of the project team carried out inclusive access site evaluation and case study analysis, research and methodology development toward the production of the EH publication “East Access to Historic Landscapes”
The result
The report won the Landscape Policy Award and the President’s Award for the UK's most outstanding project by the landscape profession at the Landscape Institute Awardson the30th November 2006. The comprehensive guidance for making historic landscapes easily accessible for visitors with disabilities was commended by judges for being "of excellent quality in terms of clarity, intelligence of advice, thoroughness of research and visual layout", "a refreshing approach" and "a very good resource pack for both professional and lay reader".
